Last Shift at USE

It seems like yesterday I was here writing my first post at USE reception, how time flies! The end of the academic year is upon us and everyone appears to be going a bit mental with sleepless nights at the IC and meals at midnight seeming to be the norm, its also time for me to do my last post as a USE intern.

I’ve had a great year working at USE and with all the other fantastic interns and staff here. I’ve learnt so much about Enterprise at the University and the wealth of talent that walks through the door everyday hasn’t failed to surprise me. I’ve been particularly impressed this year by the guys from MatchChat and Edward Millar from Edward Millar Photography who I’ve seen around the zone working hard throughout the year and who recently triumphed in different categories at the USE Business Planning Competition – just one of the great events I attended and one which I hope to return to as a competitor next year (I wasn’t allowed to enter being staff this year :( !). The recent publication of S1 magazine has also been another really impressive achievement that’s come out of the zone this year.

Not only has it been a lot of fun working here but I’ve got a lot out of it too. I’ve had opportunities to sit in on business skill workshops and also received a grant to start my own business, Mendzapp, which hasn’t done badly in its first couple of months thanks to the support I’ve received and is what I’m leaving to concentrate on next year. I hope to be posting more about what I’m doing in some blog posts next year, so here’s hoping there’s something exciting to talk about!

Overall, it’s been a great year and I’ve learnt and gained so much – if you’re looking for a great job that fits around your studies and where you’ll actually learn something too (as well as not getting covered in beer/sick) look no further!

It’s sad to see you leaving James :( but I’m sure this isn’t the end! Good luck with Mendzapp though you don’t need it, with your skills in programming, thirst for knowledge and keen business acument I don’t doubt it’ll be a success! :)

Gonna miss you James! Good luck with your business but make sure you come in to the zone to provide me with Mundy entertainment often! USE won’t be the same without you.

Whilst I was a USE Intern in 2011-2012, I founded my tech start-up, Mendzapp, focused on developing apps for Windows Phone. Almost one year on, I have been joined by two friends and we have produced several successful apps. We have also recently been accepted onto an accelerator, training and mentoring scheme run by Nokia, Microsoft and Aalto University, Finland. As part of the program in the next few months, we will be further developing one of our apps and spending some time in Finland to receive mentoring! I'll be keeping everyone up to date on our progress throughout the year here on the USE blog! Follow Mendzapp @mendzapp
