Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Support

Recent internal reviews have highlighted both the challenges and opportunities relating to the delivery of entrepreneurship support across the University.

Given the importance of entrepreneurship support to the University, we want to ensure that future support is aligned more clearly with the University’s Learning & Teaching, Research and Knowledge Exchange strategies, as well as with key regional priorities.

We will therefore be working over the next year to create a highly visible, and more integrated entrepreneurship offer which is accessible to all students, staff and graduates. Whilst we work towards this new and improved offer, Business Sheffield will be available to provide 1:1 startup support.

Enterprise Education

From the next (2018/19) academic year, the twenty credit ‘Making Ideas Happen’ module (USE 201/301/601) is discontinued. However, we are working hard to make sure that students have the opportunity to develop enterprise capabilities in their taught programme.

Support for academic colleagues wishing to embed enterprise in the curriculum has previously been provided by the University of Sheffield Enterprise Academy. In the coming academic year, we are working to embed this support offer within the Academic Practice and Skills Development section of APSE (Academic Programmes and Student Engagement). This will form an integral part of the University’s support for learning and teaching enhancement across the institution.

Whilst we are working on redeveloping the offer, you can find out more about enterprise in the curriculum on our staff-facing website. Please do also continue to get in touch with us regarding any support needs for enterprise in the curriculum - please email usea@sheffield.ac.uk.

Enterprise Skills Development

Whilst the University redevelops its approaches to enterprise and entrepreneurship support, extra-curricular skills development activities previously provided by USE will no longer be running. There are still many opportunities offered across the University to develop many skills for academic and professional success (including enterprise skills) and we encourage you to contact the following sources:

Skills Resource Bank
Careers Service
The Library Information and Digital Literacy workshops

In the transition period while we develop our entrepreneurship offer, please get in touch with Darren Chouings (d.c.chouings@sheffield.ac.uk) with any comments or areas needing more clarification.
