26 September 2014 - 10:24 am Modern Mesters: Opportunity to explore Sheffield’s’ Entrepreneurial Heritage

The origins of Sheffield Cutlery Making were individual skilled makers, known as ‘Little Mesters’ who used their high level of skills on one part of the cutlery product (such as cutting knife blanks, or sharpening knife blades). The whole item was passed on from one to another in a collaborative process leading to a product, which was, usually, sold by a company on their behalf. Many of these ‘Works’ buildings still exist in Sheffield.

In recent times many of the Works house small scale production, as before, but normally without much interaction of the makers. There is a growing trend to see how these makers can be supported, and can work in a more co-operative fashion, building on past models as re-invented for the current era.
