Looking to develop your skills? Want to become more employable? Want to meet new people? Skill Build is the ideal course for you. This semester, it will include sessions from USE, 301: Student Skills and Development Centre and The Careers Service. Sessions take place every Thursday evening

This activity is HEARable and is recognised for the Sheffield Graduate Award. In order to complete Skill Build as a HEARable activity, you need to attend five of the sessions below and complete the assignment.

You can sign up for all of the sessions, or just choose the ones that appeal most to you.


Welcome to Skill Build – Thursday 20th October, 6.15pm – 7.30pm

This week, we will introduce you to the Skill Build Course, what support you can get from the university as well as an explanation of the assignment.

Team Formation – Thursday 27th October, 6.15pm – 7.30pm

Sometimes, it is impossible to do everything yourself in a project. This session will help you understand what your own strengths and weaknesses are and how having the right team can turn a project from a flop into a success. This is great for anyone who is currently doing a group project as part of their degree or extra-curricular activities.

Setting Goals – Thursday 3rd November, 6.15pm – 7.30pm

 Every project needs goals in order to see if the project is a success or not. This session is focused around how you make SMART objectives and how you should structure your time in order to make your project a success.

Users and Benefits – Thursday 10th November, 6.15pm – 7.30pm

Today we look at how we target your event. We discover what stakeholders are, what target markets are and how they can change. We then use these to reflect on how you would use your target market to market your event effectively.

Skill Articulation and Employability – Thursday 17th November, 6.15pm – 7.30pm

Employers want you to be able to tell them why you are right for the job. Articulating skills and motivations is something many students struggle with. This session will give you the confidence to evidence your employability skills effectively for a specific role and help you secure that much coveted graduate job.

 Events Management – Thursday 24th November, 6.15pm – 7.30pm

So you have got an idea of what event you are going to plan for your assignment, but what considerations do you need to think about in order to make it a success? In this session Philip Crowther, Lecturer in Events Management at Sheffield Hallam University, will discuss the principles of successful event management, and share his experiences from many years spent in industry.
