17 February 2015 - 4:50 pm E is for….

If it isn’t one E word (enterprise) that I go on about, it is another one, employability.

We all know that the graduate market is highly competitive and you need to be able to stand out from the crowd. The way I like to describe this is by thinking of a cake: your degree is a great solid base that has got the essential knowledge that you need to do the job (or in a cake sense, you need the sponge to be a cake) but it is the things that you do on top of your degree that makes you more attractive to employers (and for me, the sprinkles, toppings and anything else you can fit on the cake makes it sooo much more attractive). What does this word mean to you?

Kids are innately creative. I see this in my own daughter, who’s just shy of three years old. Her make believe play; her imaginative uses for toys that differ wildly from what the manufacturers had in mind; her creation of her own little worlds; she’s constantly making things that are new.

But there’s a danger that this natural creativity can be stifled or stamped out over time. This was something one of our past Interns, Nicole, highlighted in this blog post, and it’s a problem that’s well recognised. Continue reading “What does ‘creativity’ mean to you?” »

16 November 2014 - 1:22 pm Who wants to be an Entrepreneur?

This is a question that we seem to ask quite a bit here at USE.  However, in an up and coming event you will be able to ask a group of people who have been there and done that, why they became an entrepreneur. What are the advantages and disadvantages of working for yourself and my favourite question- what they think is their biggest achievement? Continue reading “Who wants to be an Entrepreneur?” »

6 November 2014 - 5:17 pm Want a pizza the action?

If there is a food that shouts enterprise, it must be pizza. Why you ask? Well, you can develop a good base of skills, have a multitude of toppings (allowing you to develop your creativity ), and it is very shareable (so you can develop your communication and people skills) . Continue reading “Want a pizza the action?” »

25 August 2014 - 10:04 am BORED.

So, you have finished your course for the year (or forever), been away for a few weeks with family or friends and you have nothing planned till September. You have come to the realisation that you can watch too much Jeremy Kyle and that your reading list for next year on Quantum Mechanics is (long pause) epic (not). What can you do over the summer?
