What do you know about being an entrepreneur?

Some people think being an entrepreneur is all about being like Sir Alan Sugar, having important meetings in skyscrapers and swanning about London in a chauffeur-driven car.

But in reality being an entrepreneur is much more than that and involves A LOT of hard work.

I don’t know what you were thinking when you were reading the title, but, hopefully, the first image that came to your mind was Richard Branson’s book: “Like a Virgin – Secrets They Won’t Teach You at Business School”.

2 November 2015 - 3:53 pm The Spirit of the Entrepreneur

Since beginning work as a Social Innovation Intern at USE this September, I have found myself reflecting on exactly what an ‘entrepreneur’ is.

At the end of September, Britain said goodbye to free plastic bags on the high street. The ban came as a surprise to many, whilst to ‘banish the bag’ campaigners, the ban signified a small move in the right direction.

In the midst of a week of forgetfulness at the checkout, it was reported that Dave Arthur, a shopper from Plymouth, had started an enterprising plan in which to make money from the newly introduced charge. On social media, Dave advertised the sale of his collection of 200 ‘good brand’ plastic bags for the grand total of £5. This enabled potential buyers the opportunity to get plastic bags for 2.5p each, a half-price bargain considering the current plastic-bag market.

Dave Arthur provides a good example of what it means to be an entrepreneur. Although a somewhat simple example, through the identification of need, he used instinctive innovation in order to improve a situation and provide a solution, whilst also making a profit.

When considering what the difference is between an entrepreneur and someone who simply runs a business, we can go further, considering an entrepreneur to be a leader and manager, an innovative problem solver and a profit-maker. Essentially, an entrepreneur can be considered both a risk-taking visionary and a situation-stirring revolutionary.

Are you excited by the role of an Entrepreneur? Are you an Entrepreneur? If you answer ‘yes’ to either or both questions, why not take a look at the USE website or visit the USE Reception Desk and talk to a member of the Intern team.

1 July 2014 - 10:50 am Tickling the career bone

I always felt robotic and dull to get up early in the morning, to shave, brush, suit up and board the tube for a job that although was very well paid, was nothing more than bland, uninteresting and not aligned to the aspirations I had as a student. But something changed and for the better. Continue reading “Tickling the career bone” »
