18 January 2013 - 1:12 pm Get money to make a difference
On a chilly morning at USE, a young(ish) girl dared to dream of the things she could do with upto £5,000. Being an idealist, bitten by the social enterprise bug, having worked on an array of social action projects, who stills wakes up in the middle of the night with the latest world changing idea and who still dreams of a better more sustainable tomorrow, she let her mind wander freely. Think of the things we could do, the things we’d learn and the people we would meet? Think of the impact we could have, on our community, our environment, ourselves. You still with me? Good, because, sadly, she can’t have the funding, but you can.

Almost a year ago now, while I was a USE intern, I took the plunge and decided to start my own business, Mendzapp. At the time I was already coding some Windows Phone apps that were quite successful (as first attempts at coding go) and wanted to capitalise on this. Over the past year, USE has been working hard to raise awareness of social enterprise among students, and provide support for those of you who have great ideas for businesses that could benefit your community. Sometimes when I talk to students about their business ideas, it turns out that what they have in mind is basically a social enterprise, without them even knowing it. It always makes me happy to be able to tell them that not only is their ambitious idea something that can become reality, but that there is also a lot of support out there for these kinds of businesses.
