17 February 2015 - 4:50 pm E is for….
If it isn’t one E word (enterprise) that I go on about, it is another one, employability.
We all know that the graduate market is highly competitive and you need to be able to stand out from the crowd. The way I like to describe this is by thinking of a cake: your degree is a great solid base that has got the essential knowledge that you need to do the job (or in a cake sense, you need the sponge to be a cake) but it is the things that you do on top of your degree that makes you more attractive to employers (and for me, the sprinkles, toppings and anything else you can fit on the cake makes it sooo much more attractive). 16 July 2014 - 10:54 am Money, money, money
Like most of us, start-ups always need more money. Whether that’s to invest back into the business to build its internal structures or to create brand awareness through advertising and marketing, start-ups tend to have a tough time making enough money to finance these ventures. So what’s out there for new companies? I went to two interesting workshops hosted by USE last week to find out a bit more of what was on offer to the fledgling start-ups of this world. 12 July 2014 - 10:16 am 5 things I wish I’d known before becoming self-employed
For as long as I can remember I have always been passionate about business. Even from a young age I was always trying to think of ways to earn my keep – car washing for neighbours, cleaning for relatives, etc. doing a business degree felt so natural to me. At the time I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do; however, I knew freedom was the end goal.
When I finished university and started my own coffee shop I had very little anxiety. I had a solid business plan, the knowledge to back it up, and all of the necessary finances. I assumed everything would naturally fall into place, but as I was warned time and time again by tutors over the years, no matter how much you prepare, something will always go wrong – multiple things in my case.
These are the five things that, had I knew them at the time, could have saved my company from going under. Continue reading “5 things I wish I’d known before becoming self-employed” »
