25 May 2016 - 10:59 am Startup Weekend: not just ‘a University thing’

I can barely believe we have our 8th Startup Weekend on the horizon here in Sheffield. In some ways it doesn’t seem like 5 minutes since we ran our 1st event, with no idea how people would react to it and certainly no concept of how much of a community would grow out of it. But it was more than 5 minutes ago. It was 3 ½ years ago, in November 2012.

10 November 2015 - 11:12 am New beginnings and a ray of never giving up

Hey everyone, my name is Baiju, a very excited intern at the USE who is a bit of an adrenaline junkie. I’ll tell you a little bit about myself, but not sure where to start…

I come from Kenya, which has some of the most beautiful scenery, still trying to find something to top the Great Rift Valley and the sun setting in the horizon, watching the zebra graze the last few blades in the dark as the last golden rays hit their backs, it is bliss! I left Kenya to come to the University of Sheffield, to study Economics, as I have a passion for development and trying to bridge the gap of inequality.

6 November 2015 - 4:08 pm “You WANT to be in on the fun”

I attended startup weekend in March and November of 2014.

Nervous to arrive, and slightly new to the networking and entrepreneurial scene in Sheffield, the pizza table and friendly faces talking excitedly around it, immediately helped me feel welcome. There was a real mix of students, alumni, and working professionals, so conversations were easy, and there was a lot to talk about with people from different backgrounds. 30 October 2015 - 11:58 am A weekend to make the change!

“Do. Or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda, Jedi Master

Startup Weekends are fun packed entrepreneurship exercises in which you’ll learn much more than just starting a business. In brevity, Startup Weekends are two and a half day events; they start on a Friday evening when people pitch their ideas (It could be you too, if you have got one!). Then the participants choose the idea they would like to be part of.  The next day the teams build their product prototype and also reach out to their market to understand the challenges their business idea would face. On the final day the teams present their ideas to the judges and win prizes!

20 October 2015 - 1:43 pm “Startup weekend was the best thing I did last year”

There was an advert flying around about Startup weekend the year before I did it, but didn’t know anyone else going and decided ‘I didn’t have enough money to go’, (which was code for I am a scared little first year and that looks big and scary, and I’m also a bit poor). Despite this, I plucked up some courage and went to some other events hosted by the USE (University of Sheffield Enterprise), which were really good. 22 September 2015 - 2:47 pm An Ex-Fresher’s Guide to Enterprise

Hello everyone! So, it’s my last week in the USE office. Sad times! My projects are being finished off, my endless sheets of paper are being organised and I’ve eaten a few too many of the homemade brownies I’d supposedly bought in for everyone else!

I can’t quite believe that nine weeks of work are coming to an end. Where has the time gone?! With only a few hours until I say goodbye to the Enterprise Zone until September, my mind is filled with thoughts of Intro Week; the bright-eyed freshers moving into Endcliffe, the long-awaited return of Pop Tarts (oh how I’ve missed you) and the rather daunting start of my third and final year. Help!

The infamous Corp
