3 October 2016 - 4:02 pm The benefits of becoming a councillor in the Students’ Union
The union has ample of opportunities for you to develop and improve your skills, but none are as interesting and impactful on your students’ experience as standing for the role of Students’ Union Councillor. The benefits go far beyond making you more employable, including:
Making interesting friends
The council brings together people who are really engaged and are here to make a positive difference to student life. You might meet people who disagree with you completely, but may still become friends with them. Alongside this, you will meet people with similar interests who may well become friends throughout your university life and beyond.
Negotiating and learning
Many times the Union council sees discussion on topics which are quite controversial. These issues might not have a correct answer and the policy would depend on which way the council swings. You might find yourself on the less popular side, as I did sometimes, but believe me here even losing is winning. You will learn more from a lost argument than one which was popular.
Making a difference
The councillors do amazing things. They have prevented departments from shutting down, to helping to decide which companies are able to sell their products in the Students’ Union building, . Some councillors’ sit on various committees such as the finance committee, academic representative committee and many more.
Become informed and lead the way
Ever wondered how democracy actually works? Wondered what happens in parliamentary debates? Well, students union council isn’t the whole of the UK, but it still provides an insight on how things work in a democracy. It’s always difficult writing a first blog post. There’s that feeling of “this is going to set the tone for the rest of my time here” that means I’ve spent way too long on this first paragraph as it is, trying desperately to be witty and not doing a great job of it. Let’s give it a whirl anyway.
Hi there, my name’s Chris, I’m the new Students’ Union and Societies’ Intern, and I’m delighted to be sitting here writing this to you!
