25 May 2016 - 10:59 am Startup Weekend: not just ‘a University thing’
I can barely believe we have our 8th Startup Weekend on the horizon here in Sheffield. In some ways it doesn’t seem like 5 minutes since we ran our 1st event, with no idea how people would react to it and certainly no concept of how much of a community would grow out of it. But it was more than 5 minutes ago. It was 3 ½ years ago, in November 2012.

28 November 2013 - 9:53 am Vote for Sheffield in the Global Startup Battle!
Founder teams in 200 cities took part in intense 54-hour Startup Weekend boot camps over the last fortnight on the weekends surrounding Global Entrepreneurship Week. Each team worked almost around the clock to turn promising concepts into new startups and the top two teams from each event will now compete against one another in a virtual Global Startup Battle.
The two winning teams from Sheffield were Airstock and Goodvid.io who impressed judges with their clear value propositions and viable revenue streams. Continue reading “Vote for Sheffield in the Global Startup Battle!” »

13 November 2013 - 10:10 am Foundbite for Windows Phone Released
AppCampus provides funding, marketing and support for developers building innovative apps which remain exclusive to Windows Phone for 3 months. The concept for Foundbite was lucky enough to be picked last May and since last December I’ve been building the app and service with the help of George Powell (a fellow Sheffield student) who worked with me for several months and Alfie Woodland who works from time to time on the website. 11 October 2013 - 2:00 pm Get all startup events in Sheffield direct to your inbox!
Calling all startup addicts in Sheffield! This has been a crazy month for me – I became the curator of Startup Genome in Sheffield (please remember to add your startup if you haven’t already done so), then I became curator of Startup Digest in Sheffield, then I was just at the European Startup Weekend Organisers’ Summit (which was awesome – so many cool people in this amazing community), and now I’m back and I realised there’s only five weeks – FIVE WEEKS! – until the next Startup Weekend in Sheffield. Which got me incredibly giddy… and now I’m back to saying awesome a lot. AWESOME. Continue reading “Get all startup events in Sheffield direct to your inbox!” »

It’s now two months since we ran the last Startup Weekend in Sheffield and we’re already planning the next one in November. But it’s not just about running the weekend and that’s it. We wanted to keep up some momentum this time between events. How do we do that? Through meetups of course! Continue reading “Meeting up post Startup Weekend” »

3 May 2013 - 10:51 am What’s so great about intensive startup events?
If you’ve read my previous blogs/follow me on Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn/ ever spoken to me in person, you’ll probably know that I’m a bit of a sucker for intensive startup events. These events take ideas from concept to minimum viable product (or demo stage) in a very short period of time – usually two or three days. Sounds impossible, but it’s really not. And not only do these sort of events provide an excellent educational experience for attendees, but they’re also a lot of fun… and a little bit addictive. After the excitement of last week’s sauna evening that I wrote about in my last post it was back to work with a week full of design and user experience (UX) work ahead. We were introduced to a talented team of designers, user experience experts and branding specialists, including Christian Lindholm, a UX expert that worked on the Nokia 3310.
